POSITION TITLE: Individual and Family Safety Attorney
COMPENSATION: Full-time (35 hours a week) at rate of $25-$29/hour plus health stipend, vacation, and sick leave
LOCATION: This official location for this position is in Olympia. Remote work is supported for the length of this project.

Thurston County Volunteer Legal Services (TCVLS) promotes access to justice through the coordinated efforts of trained volunteers and community partners. TCVLS enables low-income clients to resolve their civil legal problems by providing legal advice, information, and direct representation. TCVLS relies on volunteer lawyers who assist low-income residents of Thurston, Mason, Grays Harbor, Pacific and Lewis counties. Pro bono services are provided through advice and brief service clinics, unbundled legal services, and full direct representation.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Individual and Family Safety Attorney works under the general direction of TCVLS Executive Director. Work requiring the professional judgment of a lawyer will be supervised by an attorney that will be designated upon hiring of this position. 20 hours of this position is funded through a grant from the Office of Civil Legal Aid (State of Washington) that ends June 30, 2021. The remaining 15 hours per week is funded by grants and reimbursement from a local domestic violence agency. The position serves at will.
The Individual and Family Safety Attorney will provide civil legal assistance to low income individuals or families experiencing a threat to their safety or the safety of family members. The part of the position funded by the Office of Civil Legal Aid serves those experiencing loss of income, increased stress due to social isolation, COVID-19 health problems, or other economic and/or social stressors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The remainder of the position also serves those traumatized by abuse but may not be related to COVID. Most often the Attorney will provide civil legal assistance to those who are victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, harassment, and/or other crimes. Services will include advice and counsel, limited representation, brief services, and/or extended representation.
This position will serve residents of Thurston, Mason, Grays Harbor, Pacific and/or Lewis Counties. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Valid drivers license, insurance and private vehicle required.
Essential Functions of the Position include:
• Licensed to practice law in Washington State.
• Provide legal assistance to clients in urgent situations to ensure the safety of the survivor and their family.
• Provide limited representation, brief services and extended representation to clients impacted by domestic violence who have been affected by the COVID-19 emergency, in collaboration with Thurston County Volunteer Legal Services staff and community partners.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English (interpreters are available to communicate with clients who do not speak English).
• Appear in court in-person, by video conferencing or phone based upon the operations of courts within service area.
• Provide services in a manner that is sensitive and appropriate for those who have been traumatized by physical and mental abuse and/or violence.
• Provide services that reflect understanding of working with Native Americans, persons of color, members of the LGBTQ community, and others who have been marginalized by society.
• Use of a computer, laptop, printer, copier/scanner and phone (including answering system).
• Ability to transfer handwritten information into a client database.
This a full-time position, not to exceed 35 hours per week and is paid at a rate of $25-$29/hour (depending on experience). A health care stipend, vacation and sick leave are provided. Some evening and weekend work may be required. The Attorney must have a valid Washington State Driver’s License and automobile insurance. The Attorney is required to provide own transportation for any offsite meetings.
