City of Olympia Municipal Court Contract Public Defender
The City of Olympia is accepting applications for contract public defenders to represent indigent defendant’s in the Olympia Municipal Court. The city is seeking to fill 7 contract public defense positions with contracts commencing January 1st, 2016. The city anticipates to fill two 300 case credit max positions, one 200 case credit max position, two 180 case credit max positions, one 240 case credit max arraignment/first appearance position, and one variable/ on call appellate position to provide appellate representation on an as needed basis. However, designated maximum credits may be negotiated upon hire so as to meet individual caseload standards. Applicants must be a member in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association with a minimum of two years criminal law experience, with five years preferred. Experience handling public defense cases is preferred. Contract period runs from January 1st, 2016 to December 31st, 2016, with a possible option to renew. The flat rate monthly compensation will be based on the following base scale: 300 case credits/year=$5000/month, 240 case credits/year= $4000/month, 200 case credits/year=$3,333.33/month, 180 case credits/year=$3000/month, Appeals=$600 for briefing/$200 for oral argument. Public defenders must be able to meet caseload standards and quarterly certification. Public defenders work closely with the Public Defense Coordinator. Caseload tracking and reporting to the city is required.
