Attorney General-Elect Nick Brown is seeking a First Assistant Attorney General to provide strategic guidance on complex legal matters and serve as Counsel to the Attorney General. This includes working closely with and providing advice to the Attorney General, Chief Deputy, Solicitor General, and Deputy Attorneys General and participating in strategic decision-making and coordination with client agencies, elected officials, stakeholders, and internal leadership. The AGO is the largest law office in the State of Washington, with responsibility for defending the legal rights and interests of Washingtonians and state agencies and organizations across the state.
As legal counsel and a chief advisor to the Attorney General (AG), this position provides high-level assistance and strategic guidance on special projects and complex legal matters. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Provide guidance and support on special projects and complex legal matters as assigned by the Attorney General.
Provide legal counsel to the Attorney General on a wide variety of issues, including litigation, policy decisions, legislation, compliance issues, ethics, and related matters.
Provide advice to the Chief Deputy, Chief of Staff, Solicitor General, and Deputy Attorneys
General on legal issues.
Review, draft, and assist with briefing, formulating strategic arguments, and other activities related to litigation. Conduct related legal research in support of litigation and briefing.
Assist with legal problem solving and persuasive and effective advocacy.
Carry and manage an assigned workload, including litigating cases before state and federal courts and providing legal advice to client agencies.
Salary & Benefits
$166,667 – $200,000 (mid-point, $183,333) (Annual)
New hires/appointees typically receive between min- and mid-point, however, we may go slightly higher based on experience and pay equity.
Salary package includes generous medical, dental, and vision benefits, vacation accrual, and pension.
