Court Staff Attorney / Pro Tem Commissioner
Summary of Duties
As appointed by the Thurston County Superior Court Judges, you will hear and conduct calendars in Thurston County Superior Court and may also be assigned to ex-parte calendars, and appointed to decide petitions and motions for ex-parte orders. Other responsibilities that may be inherent in this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Directly provides or supervises the provision of information and administrative, substantive and procedural advice to the court and individual judges in conjunction with pending civil and criminal litigation.
- Manages special projects and other administrative support tasks for the court and judges as needed.
- Researches and drafts appropriate legal memoranda recommendations and orders for the court’s signature.
- Reviews complaints, petitions, motions and pleadings filed with the court (especially those of self-represented litigants) to determine issues involved and basis for granting or denying of relief.
- Evaluates court procedures and reviews dockets of pending litigation to advise judges regarding appropriate progress.
- Assists in preparation of statistical and other periodic reports as requested.
- Identifies procedural problem areas, makes recommendations as to solutions as requested.
- Keeps abreast of changes in the law and court rules and drafts proposed updates and revisions as appropriate.
- Responsible for recruitment, training and assignment of work to law clerk/law student interns for the performance of legal research and writing tasks as required by the judges.

Qualifications
- Graduation from a recognized school of law.
- Must be a member of the Washington State Bar Association with a minimum of three years relevant experience as an attorney.
Desired Skills
While not required, the ideal candidate will have previous experience with in-depth researching and analysis of case law.
